A Guide for Parents about Good Sound Production
We are all born into this world helpless and inarticulate.
As we grow we learn to sit up, crawl, walk, run, etc. We also learn to communicate, to talk. At first, we communicate through smiling and crying. We add laughing, gurgling, cooing, and then begin to add simple sounds like "ma" and "da." Soon, through trial and error (and parental feedback) these become "mama" and "dada."
Most sound production requires a combination of actions produced together to make a specific sound. Actions, such as tongue placement (or movement), lip placement, airflow, and vibration of the vocal chords, all work together to produce the variety of sounds we use in the English language.
Speech delay
Sometimes, for one or more of a variety of reasons, a child will not follow the recognized path of speech development. They may be late talkers, they may not have the oral motor skills necessary to produce the sounds, they may not see the behavior modeled that they are supposed to imitate, they may not see the need. In some cases, there is a physical problem, so we strongly advise parents to consult their pediatrician and discuss their concerns.
In many cases, speech can be encouraged by:
| *Talking to your child | |
| *Being a good role model | |
| *Expecting them to speak-- to "use their words" when they want something |
There are a lot of fun things you can do with your child to help them build up their oral motor skills.
What is the Sounds Like Fun! DVD?
Sounds Like Fun! is an interactive DVD designed to help parents
understand how to help their children develop good sound production.
The Sounds Like Fun! DVD shows how a typical therapy session is conducted.
Seventeen consonant sounds and 5 letter blends (digraphs) are demonstrated.
The therapist first demonstrates the sound and then has the child produce
the proper sound.
Each sound is demonstrated and practiced in all three word positions: the
initial position, the middle position, and the final position in the word.
The DVD covers three main areas:
"I recommend [your] DVD to parents of primary school-age kids but also [to parents of] infants and toddlers -- there are some great suggestions to help kids develop sounds. I wish I had this four years ago!"
Robbin A, Amazon customer review
"Two of my children have attended speech therapy, one for a year and the other for several years. Most of the activities demonstrated on the DVD are similar to or exactly like the activities our speech therapists used. At $39.99 plus shipping this product is MUCH CHEAPER than one visit to a speech therapist."
