What is language enrichment? Language Enrichment is the process whereby we help our children develop their receptive and expressive language skills. We do this in 4 ways: Present, Listen, Expand, and Model. Present new information. Give them a wide variety of activities -- take field trips, study nature, go to the zoo or museum, visit historical places. Listen to your child. Respond to what they say. Use sentences slightly longer than your child is using. Introduce new vocabulary words. You are your child's first role model for language. Expand upon what your child tells you. If your child tells you "milk gone," you can expand on their two-word sentence by saying, "Yes, your milk is all gone." Model correct word usuage, proper grammar, proper pronunciation, and appropriate responses. Have your child help you with an activity. Describe what you are doing. Explain to them the sequence of what you will be doing. Explain new task-specific words. Have them repeat to you the steps of the project when you are finished. Cooking is a great activity for working together while adding new words, concepts, and language skills. |
