A Guide for Parents about Good Sound Production

What is Sound Production?

The Sound Production is the process of making the sounds (and sounds in words). This is discussed in basic terms of where the tongue should be, what position the lips should be in, should our vocal chords be vibrating. Does that sound too technical? It's not really.

In the Sounds Like Fun! DVD, the therapist, Erin, calls the vocal chords the "motor." Our motor can be "on" or "off." For the letter /f/ our motor is off. For the letter /v/ which has the lips and teeth in a similar position, the motor is on. The child can put his fingers on his throat to feel the difference between motor on and motor off when he speaks.
